The Concept
Alpha Box & Dice embarked on one of the most creative journeys in Australian winemaking - creating an "Alphabet of Wines" where each letter represents a unique winemaking project. This innovative concept allows them to showcase the incredible diversity of South Australian grape varieties, creating wines based on fruit availability and quality rather than traditional expectations.
The Venue
Their cellar door is housed in a heritage-listed barn that perfectly captures their unconventional approach. The space has a rustic, "edgy" feel with both indoor and outdoor seating areas overlooking estate vineyards. The venue has become particularly popular with younger wine enthusiasts and fills up quickly, so early arrival or advance booking is recommended.
Winemaking Philosophy
Alpha Box & Dice focuses on producing different varieties grown throughout South Australia, allowing them to create unique expressions that challenge traditional winemaking conventions. Their approach is experimental yet quality-focused, with each "letter" wine telling its own story of variety, vintage, and vineyard.
Wine Portfolio
The Alphabet of Wines includes everything from traditional varieties interpreted in new ways to rare and unusual grapes that showcase South Australia's viticultural potential. Popular letters include:
- A-Series wines: Foundational expressions
- D - Dolcetto: Highly recommended by visitors and wine critics
- Various letters: Each representing different grape varieties and winemaking experiments
Visitor Experience
The cellar door offers a unique tasting experience where visitors can explore wines they may never have encountered elsewhere. The informal atmosphere and passionate staff create an educational yet relaxed environment perfect for wine discovery.
Awards and Recognition
Alpha Box & Dice has gained recognition for their innovative approach to winemaking and their ability to maintain quality across such a diverse portfolio. Their experimental nature has earned them a loyal following among wine adventurers.
